Frequently Asked Questions - Pool Maintenance

What must I do on a weekly basis to maintain my pool?

•  Clean the skimmer basket at the pool as well as the pool pump basket. (turn pump off first)

•  Check automatic chlorinator (if equipped) and top up with pucks as needed. The Nature II system only requires a new cartridge at the start of each season and needs no maintenance.

•  Remove leaves and debris as required.

•  Vacuum the pool at least once or twice per week.

•  Check the water level in the pool. The level should be at least half way up the skimmer. If you are losing a significant amount of water i.e. 1" per day call Koho Pools service department.

•  Cartridge filters should be rinsed every six weeks.

•  Sand filters should be backwashed weekly or when the pressure gauge reads 17-20 lbs or if you notice the flow from the returns are diminished.

•  Test your pool water at least once weekly and always after a heavy rainfall Make the necessary adjustments to chlorine level, PH and/or alkalinity. Don't guess with chemicals - before using read the labels and follow directions carefully.

•  Take a water sample to Koho Pools once a month for testing or at any time if you have problems and need assistance.

When do I use a solar blanket on my pool?

  • Solar blankets are a great heat retainer and should be used in the spring and late summer/fall especially to reduce heat loss. During hot summer days it is recommended to take the blanket off during the day to permit better circulation and prevent algae from growing.
  • Do not put the blanket on the pool directly after shocking the pool because the high chlorine levels will cause the solar blanket to deteriorate.
  • Make sure you keep the solar blanket out of direct sunlight when stored away from the pool using the protective plastic sheet provided with the cover.
